Meet grandMaster marco discipio

Martial artist in white gi with brown belt performing a focused stance.

For over four decades, Grandmaster Marco DiScipio has dedicated his life to the study, practice, and teaching of Tang Soo Do — not simply as a martial art, but as a path to building stronger, more confident individuals.

He began his journey in 1982 under Grandmaster Richard Byrne, founder of the American Tang Soo Do Association — one of the oldest and most respected Tang Soo Do organizations in the United States. What started as training quickly became a lifelong commitment to discipline, growth, and excellence.

Over the next 30 years, he trained directly under Grandmaster Byrne while also seeking out knowledge from some of the most respected martial artists in the world. His journey extended beyond a single system, learning from masters including Grandmaster Dominic Giacobbe, Grandmaster Stumpf, Grandmaster Klingon, Grandmaster C.S. Kim, and Grandmaster Robert Beaudoin.

He continued to expand his experience through advanced seminars and cross-training with elite instructors, including world-renowned fighters like Grandmaster Bill “Superfoot” Wallace and Grandmaster Joe Lewis, along with training in Judo and Small Circle Jiu-Jitsu.

But what truly sets Grandmaster DiScipio apart is not just what he has learned — it’s how he teaches.

For more than 30 years, he has guided hundreds of students — from young children stepping onto the mat for the first time to adults seeking strength, focus, and real self-defense skills. His teaching style is patient, structured, and deeply personal, helping each student grow with confidence, discipline, and purpose.

In 1991, he opened Salem Street Studio — now the longest-running Tang Soo Do school in Massachusetts and the headquarters of the American Tang Soo Do Association. It has become more than a school — it is a place where students develop resilience, confidence, and life skills that extend far beyond the dojo.

Following the passing of Grandmaster Byrne in 2012, Grandmaster DiScipio stepped into the role of leading the ATA, continuing to guide and grow the organization while honoring its traditions and expanding its reach worldwide.

His expertise extends beyond traditional martial arts training. He has taught his Street Practical Self-Defense System to law enforcement professionals throughout the Boston area and has led personal protection workshops focused on real-world awareness, safety, and confidence.

At the core of his teaching is a deeper philosophy — the belief that true martial arts training requires balance between mind, body, and spirit. His approach integrates mindfulness alongside physical training, helping students develop focus, emotional control, and mental resilience.

This perspective is strengthened by his academic background, earning a Master’s Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, allowing him to support students not only as martial artists, but as individuals growing through life’s challenges.

His commitment to both his students and his community has earned him significant recognition, including the Key to the City of Medford. He was also inducted into the ATA Hall of Fame in 2012, reflecting his lifelong dedication to the art and its growth.

Today, he continues to build connections with martial artists around the world — always striving to improve, evolve, and pass that growth on to every student he teaches.

His mission is clear:

👉 To build confident, disciplined individuals who are prepared to face challenges, stand strong under pressure, and succeed in life — on and off the mat
